- Rinse and soak the rice. Rinse the basmati rice under cold water until the water runs mostly clear. Soak for 30–60 minutes, then drain well.
- Heat the oil and cumin. Heat the oil in a saucepan over medium heat. Add the cumin seeds and let them sizzle until fragrant, being careful not to burn them.
- Sauté the rice. Add the drained rice and gently sauté with the cumin for 1–2 minutes.
- Add water and salt. Pour in 2 cups of water and add salt to taste. Stir gently once.
- Cook the rice. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and cover. Cook until the water is absorbed and the rice is tender, about 12–15 minutes.
- Rest and fluff. Turn off the heat and let the rice rest, covered, for 5 minutes. Gently fluff with a fork and serve warm.
Notes
This recipe uses the open-pan method. For best results, soak the basmati rice for 30–60 minutes before cooking. The amount of water needed can vary slightly depending on the type and brand of basmati rice.
